Check out this delightful wine display, stored in a fully-refrigerated modern home wine cellar with a very organic and evergreen design. This was a home wine room project done by one of our industry partners, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, and they did a great job fusing both style and technology to create a contemporary, walk-in wine room!
If you’re planning to have a wine cellar constructed in your Gables Estates home with wooden wine racks, this project might just give you all the inspiration you need!
It’s a Timeless Wooden Wine Rack Design for this Home Wine Cellar
Next to the wine cellar refrigeration system and insulation, wine racks are probably the 2nd most essential pieces to invest in, in your wine cellar. Wine racks keep your bottles in place and secure them from unnecessary movements that may affect their natural aging process (remember that some wines continue their maturation process for a long time). This is why wine racks should be built with utmost workmanship and durability.
Contemporary home wine rooms usually combine metal, wood, and cable to give rise to the theme. However, for this wine closet, the client wanted to use only wood for the entire wine cellar racking and leave the modern materials on the door, a.k.a. the glass door.
Custom Wooden Wine Racking for a Versatile Display
If you’re already a wine collector or are planning to be, you know that wine and spirit bottles come in many shapes and sizes. There are the standard 750s and magnums (>1500ml) that come in traditional long-neck bottles; then there are also brandies, whiskies, vodkas, and the like, that sometimes come in stout, square-shaped bottles. Needless to say, if you’re collection features an assortment of bottle types, your wine storage should be able to accommodate them all.
In this home wine cellar, the Coastal Custom Wine Cellars team did a marvelous job creating a custom wooden wine rack that can hold different types of wines and spirits. The client was a fan of Cabernets, Pinots, Sangrias, and some Don Perignon that come in standard or magnum sizes, and they fit perfectly throughout this multifaceted wine racking.
Upon entering the contemporary residential wine cellar glass door, you’ll notice the central shelf with a large, arched decanting table built into the rack. The upper half of the central shelf consists of slots for single 750ml bottles and two vertical shelves for giant wine bottles. This is followed below by two rows of high-reveal display racks with a light valance, then x-bins and horizontal shelves at the bottom.
Both the left and right sides of the wine cellar were built with double-deep horizontal wine shelves and deep cubbies for wine crates and decanting toolboxes. Beside the door and glass windows are also horizontal shelves for additional storage.
What Makes Maple a Good Wood for Wine Racking
There are different hardwood varieties you can use to make beautiful wooden wine racking. We think the deciding factors boil down to the color and texture you want for your wine cellar. Remember that the color and texture of your shelves can impact the overall vibe of your wine cellar, so it’s important to carefully select your wood.
For this Gables Estates home wine room, they found it best to go with a naturally light brown variety (almost cream-colored). Maple has a naturally off-white color with light brown hues, and it features a closed-grain pattern, making it look much smoother. Some wine racks are polished with lacquer (as in this case) and stained to achieve a specific color, so it depends on the final look you want to create in your custom wine cellar. With the wood’s natural decay-resistant properties, this wine rack can last long.
Light brown wine cellar racking was an excellent choice for this wine cellar, also because even though it was a walk-in wine cellar, the space was still relatively narrow. The light colors helped make the space feel a little less packed.
Securing A Highly-Prized Wine Collection with a Passcode-Locked Wine Cellar Door
Since this home wine cellar featured neutral, minimalist colors, like the adjacent room, the team maintained that kind of aesthetic by utilizing a simple wine cellar glass door with a wooden frame. This was a single door that they attached to a wooden jamb with ball-bearing hinges. Part of the wine display can easily be seen through the glass, especially since they didn’t add additional etching.
What’s more remarkable about this glass wine cellar door is its security system. Because the client had an expensive wine collection, he wanted a more advanced door lock. While some homeowners settle for the traditional knob or deadbolt locks, this collector went for a keyless lock system — particularly a keypad-type system. Apart from having more peace of mind, he didn’t have to worry anymore about losing the keys to his wine cellar.
This feature is interesting, too, because it’s another modern touch to the design besides the glass paneling.
If you have limited-edition wines and spirits, upgrading your security system would be worthwhile. Our team would be happy to discuss what other door lock options you have, especially if you want to explore more advanced systems like digital smart locks!
